I’ve been wondering this myself. The sedan is kinda blah, but I like the looks of that hatch.

From what I’ve heard the MG6 is a fairly reasonable car with a rubbish engine. The MG3 looks pretty decent (had a poke around one when I was car shopping) as a cheap car, no idea how it drives though.

The front fascia and cutlines on the first one hurt my soul. Maybe it’s just a bad photo/angle though.

Yes but they are very cheap so you get what you pay for but like most cases by the time you spec it up you might as well buy a Vauxhall or Ford.

It’s the same across the range they are decent cars ruined by amazingly bad engines which means they aren’t worth it despite how cheap they are.

I saw a fiesta sedan yesterday in platinum edition with stitched leather seats, all the bells and whistles.

I couldn’t stop wondering why they got a fiesta then? You know it wasn’t for the power to weight ratio or the driving dynamics, it was a fiesta sedan so i assume the owner was looking for grounded to the ground.

people are weird

Probably cost prevented them from designing anything better, surprised they didn’t buy in better engines from another manufacturer though.

The Chinese owners really need to take a leaf out of the Indian’s book and just let MG get on with it rather than rebadging crappy Chinese cars, look at how well JLR are doing.

Probably because the Ford dealer was closest and that is what they had in stock.

Today I learned that MG still exists - even if it’s just in name only.

I think they use some revised version of the K-series, could be wrong tho.

In house built from the ancient K series.

I don’t think there was much of MG left by the time they restarted production though. Jaguar Land Rover were much more stable.

I was initially looking at them for awhile back when I had an MG ZT and wanted a newer car, they are well rated for their handling and interior being pretty good for the price range however the engine wasn’t economical as it’s rivals also was a bit gutless

i’m surprised they don't buy from outside, there are plenty of engines they could import

Yeah a lot of manufacturers share engines (for example the engine in my friends Focus started life as a Peugeot engine) so I don’t know why they couldn’t strike up a similar deal for a better engine.

I believe the consensus is that they’re decent enough cars but not really remarkable in any particular way. “Adequate” would be the word, sort of like where Kia was in maybe the mid ‘00s.

If I recall correctly, the K-series motors were lauded as characterful zingy motors that punched above their weight, and they were used in the MGF and in the first generation (translation: the ones we didn’t get) Lotus Elise.

About twenty years ago, I rented a Rover 414 or 416 and I remember the experience confirmed the above impression.

A rorty, zippy motor that isn’t afraid to pull a car around with some gusto might not be so bad.

They’re turbo’d now though so that takes a lot of the zingyness away, plus they aren’t up to modern efficiency and refinement standards. Not to mention how unreliable some of the K series motors were. The MG TF went through head gaskets as often as a normal car needs timing belts.
